The Scavengers' Challenger

In the second unit of my Humanities class, Stories, we learned about what makes a good character, fables, symbolism, and lessons in writing. The fables that we read were simple but they were able to teach a lesson. Symbols are everywhere and they can help the story move forward because when that "symbol" is mentioned in a story the reader gets a better understanding of the mood. The purpose of this project is to choose a value that we think people should learn. My fable will show the importance of sharing and why it is not okay to be greedy.

FABLE:

New York City,

On the gritty streets of a busy city, a group of animals struggles to stay up with the hustle and bustle. These creatures are not afraid to get down and dirty. They are the ones that want to change how everyone sees them. These animals are led by a Pigeon named Lemmy.

Lemmy is unlike all the other pigeons; he does not gather in flocks and lives alone. Lemmy likes to go out and get food. He wants to be in the abandoned Blockhouse in Central Park because there are very few people that visit there. He prefers solitude because it bothers him when people call him a flying rat. One day, Lemmy flew into an alley where he one day to find some food. He could smell where the food was coming from but he couldn’t find it. He looked and looked, and he stumbled upon a group of animals called the Scavengers. They noticed that Lemmy was looking, and they all turned around and called him over.

“Come over here!” squawked one of the members of the Scavengers.

“What’s your name?” asked another.

Lemmy shuffled over, and he noticed that all the food that he was smelling was in a pile in the middle of the Scavengers.

“My name’s Lemmy. Is all this food just for you?!”

"We collect food to help any animals that need it. Do you need some?"

“But, where did you get all of this?” asked Lemmy.

“We saw the owner from Vespucci’s Pizzeria throwing a lot of pizza. The stuff they couldn’t sell during the day. So, we jumped all over the dumpster before Eddie the Raccoon got ahold of it.” said Joey the Rat.

“Who’s Eddie?” Asked Lemmy

“Eddie is a greedy Raccoon that goes around stealing other people’s food” Said Bowie the cat

“And I hear that he doesn’t even eat it” Joey said

After a long look at the delicious pizza, Lemmy decided that it would be best if other animals got their share first.

Lemmy prepared to take off back to the Blockhouse, but before he could, he noticed two glowing eyes in the darkness around the corner. He remembered Eddie, Remembered about the animals in need. He quickly turned around and told the scavengers to grab the food and run. Lemmy grabbed the most food that he could and followed the scavengers to their hiding spot. Eddie followed them. Lemmy got a good look at him, he was not an average sized raccoon. Eddie was at least double the size that he is supposed to be.

When the scavengers and Lemmy reached the safe house, they were all out of breath, put the food down and it looked like there was less food this time and now it smelled of sweat and fear.

Exhausted, they sat down and each exchanged their looks. as if on cue, they all laughed and laughed. They laughed until it hurt.

"He looked so dumb!" joey squeaked out in between his bursts of laughter.

Deep down all of them never felt so scared and so thrilled at the same time

Then all of a sudden there was a loud knock on the door.

The group jumped at the sound and hid all of the food.

Joey looked through the peep hole and he saw that it was Holly the Hawk. Joey opened the door and welcomed her in.
He called out the rest of the guys and told them it was safe.
They all came out of their hiding spot and greeted Holly.

"What brings you here Holly?" Asked Bowie

"I am here to make an offer" She replied

"About what?" Asked Joey

"An offer that will bring together all the animals, this offer will finally put a stop to Eddie. He has made us all suffer enough. The Flying Defiance

In conclusion, Anthropomorphism played a huge role in my fable because not only can my characters talk, which gives them human traits, but they also formed a club, and these characters have standards that they follow. This allows the reader to relate more to the characters even though they aren't human. In my fable there were also a lot of symbols, Lemmy the Pigeon was one of them because when you see Pigeons, you usually try to scare them away and think about how these animals are basically flying rats, but what you don't know is that these animals are just trying to survive. I also used the other animals as symbols, Holly the hawk is a predator that usually eats pigeons, but in this case, she became a good friend to Lemmy; so this shows that anyone could be your friend, even if they have a natural instinct to eat you. I truly believe that sharing is something that everyone needs to practice because sometimes it makes you look like a bad person and when you act like Eddie the Raccoon, nobody will like you.
