Billy vs. Rhinovirus

In the second sophomore STEAM course, Disease, our first unit is about how diseases affect the body. For the Action Project, we researched diseases including how they are transmitted, who they affect, what body systems they change and how it changes the life of the person with that disease. We then had to create a character profile and give that character a disease. I enjoyed working on the drawing. The research was a bit intimidating because there is a lot of information about rhinovirus and I was looking for some very specific things, but I ended up finding a few great resources that were very helpful.

BILLY:

Billy is a normal 16 year old boy, he is the son of Larry and Victoria, both of his parents are healthy people. Billy asked his parents to let him sleepover his friends house. His parents let him go, but they didn't know that Billy's friend was sick. Billy was there for 3 days, when he came back home he was really sick. His parents took his temperature and they noticed that he had a fever.

RHINOVIRUS (COMMON COLD):

The rhinovirus is the most common viral infectious agent in humans and is the predominant cause of the common cold. Rhinovirus infection proliferates in temperatures of 33–35 °C, the temperatures found in the nose. Rhinoviruses belong to the genus Enterovirus in the family Picornaviridae. Symptoms of the common cold caused by the rhinovirus include sore throat, runny nose, coughing, sneezing, watery eyes, headaches, and body aches. Infants and children may develop fever, and otitis media. Infants may develop more severe disease such as croup, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia.
