Bean Girl to the Rescue!

The name of this course is "Stories", and the purpose of this course is to make stories and dig deeper into other stories to find their meanings and break down the figure of speech that is used and the words that they choose. The theme of this unit is Origin, we have learned the origins of different mythologies, such as Norse and Greek/Roman. We also learned the origins of Non-Fiction characters like Black Panther. We have also learned about the different figures of speech. We learned about Adjectives (Words to describe a noun), Adverbs (words that modify a verb), and Metaphors (Comparing something using like or as). We also had a deliverable that had us dig deep into a character's origin story, we had to use descriptive words, and the task that we were given was to explain the video like we would explain it to a blind person. This task was difficult, but it showed how descriptive writing could get. In this project, we had to create a character (or modify another character) and create the world that our character lives in. We also had to create a visual representation of our stories. My original story is below the visual representation. My visual representation is a collage, this collage shows my character using her powers to clean the disgusting industrial hell that she calls home.

Story:

Long ago, there was a city of plants. These plants were metallic flowers and pollen from smokestacks. There were great old forests, made of concrete and steel. There were many people there; each has a job at these factories, and they are all paid the minimum wage. They enjoy their jobs at these factories. This city would be one of the safest places to live…if there was no pollution, There were no skyscrapers in this city, only plants, and factories which meant it was a pollution dump. The sky is so dirty and thick that even the air left a taste in the people’s mouths. Everyone in this city had asthma and other respiratory problems. In fact, the pollution was so bad that everyone was advised to wear gas masks and use filtration systems in their homes.

All this would change with one magical bean and one normal girl, named Daniela Pinto Bean.

Daniela was a normal high schooler who did normal high school things. She woke up and went through the same daily routine; she went to school, did her homework at the library, went to work, and went home to eat with her family.

But one day, that all changed. Daniela woke up to see that her alarm clock had no power, she looked at her phone only to see that it was 9:00! The class just started and she was still in bed. Her dad cut the power line accidentally, so her house had no power. The outage seemed to last forever (even though it only lasted two hours). She waited a long time to continue with her day when she arrived late to school, throwing off her perfect attendance. When she went to the library to do her homework, her favorite spot was already taken, so she had to do her work in the noisiest part of the library, causing papers that would normally be A+’s to turn into B-’s. She decided to leave the unfinished work for the next day as her long shift at the local news station was approaching.

Finally, her shift was over and when she got home and opened the door to the familiar smell of beans that filled the house, she dropped her belongings and washed her hands, and sat down to have dinner with her family she told them about her stressful day. After her long day where nearly everything went wrong, she was comforted by the warm, familiar food that lay in front of her. Her mom made the most flavorful pot of pinto beans. She didn’t realize how hungry she was until she caught a whiff of those beans. Her stomach had never rumbled so much, in fact, it was so loud her dad could hear it from the other room! She devoured the bowl of beans, not realizing that she was about to eat a very unusual bean. She ate the Super Magic Bean that turned her into a bean and granted her Super Farting Powers that purify the air and they also allowed her to fly. After gaining this superpower, Daniela tried to live her life as she normally did as if she didn’t have Super Farting Powers or was a giant walking bean. One day, after an especially heavy lunch, she noticed that every time she farted, she would fly and the air around her smelled fresh and clean, she did not believe it, so she decided to go to the bathroom and test out if she was dreaming. And after multiple farts, she realized that she could clean the air. When she got home she explained to her parents that she had the ability to fly and clean the air. They were shocked to hear that, they did not think that it was out of the ordinary, so they told her that she could either hide her powers from the world or use them to make the world a better place.

Daniela Pinto Bean was destined to change the industrial hell that she lived in into a beautiful utopia where life of all kinds thrived. She was very determined to change this place, one fart at a time.

After a year of farting her air-cleaning farts, the city was filled with plants that bloomed with pollen instead of smog. And trees scraped the sky instead of smokestacks. Daniela didn’t stop at just her city, she cleaned every city until the planet, Exhabit, was thriving with life and the pollution levels were little to none.

Conclusion:

I really enjoyed this project, it was very fun, I liked that I was able to create my own origin story and my own world. I also liked that I was able to make a visual representation, which ties it back to the field experience at the Poetry Foundation, where we were looking at the visual representations that Monica Ong had created. The most challenging part of this AP was creating the character and the world that they live in. One thing that I would have done differently is the collage, I think that It would have looked a little better if I had made it on paper instead of on the computer because if I did it on paper, it would have looked a little neater.
