Position Paper

Welcome to my second AP for my class, Food for Thought. We have been learning about the history of food and how it helped build civilizations and the geology of the origins and travels of food. In this unit, called "Death", we explored the dangers of monocultures and colonialism. We also learned about trade history, and the darker side of food, which is why the unit was called death. We watched a documentary on the dark journey of how food gets to our tables and how everything is driven by one crop, CORN. (the documentary is called "Food, Inc.") We are doing this AP to gain an understanding of how the food system is going to look when we are older, and what we can do to stop it from becoming a disaster, by looking for solutions.

Did you know that 790 million people lack access to enough food (from unstats.un.org)? This amount of people is equal to the population of the state of California times 20! The SDG that I will be talking about is SDG 2, Zero Hunger. I will specifically be talking about 2.1, which is to end hunger and ensure access to food for all people. This SDG is of global importance because there are 790 million people who lack reasonable access to food and this is a big problem, and what can we do to help lower its number, well I have a solution. According to BorgenProject.org, in order to solve and make this SDG come true, we must earn $45 billion dollars per year until 2030 to end world hunger, which is how much Elon Musk bought Twitter. Where can we get this money from you ask, well we could get it with the help of other countries, this is a global problem, so it must also be solved by the whole world.

The goal is to solve the world’s hunger problem, which is not a simple task because there are so many people, in fact, 1 in 8 children face hunger in the state of Illinois (feedingamerica.org). This is why the United Nations has made this problem a priority because it is something that we must help end. In fact, we have the resources to end this problem, but there are still millions of people who are malnourished because of unequal access and inefficient handling. (https://unstats.un.org/sdgs/report/2016/goal-02/) It is also a priority because, after decades of decline, the number of people who suffer from hunger had begun to slowly increase in the year 2015. As of right now, the world is not on track to achieving Zero Hunger by 2030. If the rates of increase continue, the number of people who are affected by hunger would pass 840 million people by 2030, which is about 9% of the world’s population. (from un.org)

There are many countries that have faced hunger problems that could help us understand how to better fix the world’s hunger problem. Take North Korea for example, they faced a famine that was caused by floods and droughts and the inability to distribute food properly. The solution to this horrible problem was to get help from other countries. North Korea got help from the United States, South Korea, China, and other countries. Receiving over 12,390 tons of food.
